Additional information:
In the second half of the
last century, this most extended seaside commune of the province
Ascoli Piceno developed along Aprutina (Lauretana) road that
connects the coast of the region Abruzzo and Loreto, directed the
development of the coastal settlements, together with the railroad,
inaugurated in 1863.
During the Benedictine re-colonisation of the territories between
the Chienti and the Tenna, the Abbey of the Holy Cross was founded
in 886, the ruins of which are preserved in Casette d’Ete, fraction
of Sant’Elpidio a Mare. Between the 11th and the 16th century, the
pier of Porto Sant’Elpidio acquired importance as a stage along
navigation routes, commerce of hinterlands, as well as military
defence.
The still existing tower in the centre of the town belongs to that
period. From the 9th century on, shoemaking became the principal
production of the territory. Porto Sant’Elpidio has specialised in
production of women footware.
The feast of San Crispino (25th October), protector of shoemakers is
very popular. Green oases are found in the gardens of elegant
aristocratic villas: Villa Murri, Villa Barucchello, Villa Trevisani
and Villa Rutigliano. Short deviation from State Road 16 leads to
the Sanctuary of St Maria della Corva, memorable for an apparition
of the Virgin in 1829. |
