It has been populated since the Roman Age (as shown by archaeological finds in the area of Villa Montana dating back to the Punic Wars and by the 3^rd century BC Greek statue of Eusculapio). Altidona historically proved to be a rebellious and resolute temperament. At first it belonged to the Abbey of Montecassino; afterwards to that of Farfa; at the very beginning of the new millennium, it knew how to consolidate its own tourist vocation by taking advantage of its beautiful beach and efficient tourist facilities.

Healthy sea breeze mixes here with fresh breath of wind arriving from the hills. It wraps the Tower and sneaks past the medieval entrance to the beautiful walls. Then it sweetly disperses into the streets of the small town. It plays and whirls over the pavements of the main square, watched over by the facade of the 18^th c St Mary and San Ciriaco's Church. (A valuable 14^th century polyptych of Venetian art and a Virgin with Child, two Saints and the Donator, painted in oil and attributed to Vincenzo Pagani, are preserved in this church.) At last, with delicate tenderness, it slightly touches the Virgin of Mercy, a wooden sculpture representing the art of the Marches from the 16^th century, kept in the church having the same name.

Wrapped in this pleasant breeze, it is easy to console one's healthy appetite with a steaming plate of vinciscassi (exquisite local lasagne), or with tasteful polenta with snails: both traditional dishes that Altidona properly celebrates in summer.
