History
• 9th-4th centuries BC: sepulchral furnishings belonging to the Piceno civilization reveal the presence of an inhabited site since the iron age.
• 1st-2nd centuries AD: sporadic remains of villas and traces of a necropolis (grotte and colombaria) are evidence of a Roman period.
• 3rd-5th centuries: in the first centuries of Christianity Montefiore becomes seat of a parish church, that is of a baptismal church dedicated to Saint Lucy, with jurisdiction over a vast territory.
• 1178: a document mentions the two castles of Montefiore and Aspromonte which, united in a single village, gave birth to the Libero Comune of Montefiore (city-state of Montefiore). The place named Aspromonte, which still identifies a town area, is linked by legend to a fierce battle fought by the army of Charlemagne against the Saracen hordes led by Almonte.
• 1378: the commune enters in the influence’s sphere of Fermo, which rules it through a podestà nominated by Fermo itself.
• 15th century: with the end of the city-state, Montefiore passes under the Papal State dominion which, in order to better defend the castle, enlarged the town walls.
• 17th-18th century: the political life of the commune is managed on behalf of the Papal State by nobles and land owners who do not encourage Montefiore’s economic and civil development.
